DAY 6: FRUIT TULIP

Welcome back and to Day 6 of your Painting Challenge!

Today it’s all about perspective. We’re practicing opening up our perspective to how we tap into our creative energies, for how long or little, with what tools, what to paint, our perspective of how it makes us feel and how we view our art and any finished product. Changing our perspective of how we view ourselves and our creative process can be powerful. We can easily shift into receiving the colorful joy that is here for us. It’s a choice. Let’s make it easy by simply changing our perspective.

We’re practicing opening up our perspective today by painting a tulip from viewing it from above. Imagine you stumble across a newly opened tulip and you look deep down into its center. This tulip was a study for a commission and you can still see the grid peaking through that I used to guide me.

The Painting Practice

Remember to turn off your phone notifications before you start.

  1. Draw an outline of a rectangular size of 8×10 inches or smaller on your canvas paper.
  2. While looking at your reference photo as your inspiration, do a simple outline of the flower on your paper. Just a rough sketch will do.
    • Start by finding your center where all six petals will connect to.
    • Then sketch your top center, then left and right petals.
    • Followed by the three petals in the background.
    • Now add the details of your center.
  3. Choose your colors, they can be whatever colors you’d like. Start with the darker areas of the petals first, then merge it with the lighter center. Remember to clean your brush between different blends or when you go to a lighter hue. The three petals in the background are lighter because they are more open and receive the light more from the perspective of how I painted this. If you want to do the opposite, go for it.
  4. Grab some water and your brushes, and don’t forget a towel to clean off your wet brush.
  5. Now, set a gentle timer and paint for 20 minutes for some meditative joy and playful painting.
  6. Claim your creativity and honor your journey of showing up for yourself by signing your art work.

If you feel called to continue painting past 20 minutes, please do so and let us know when you share it.

SHARE YOUR CREATION:

Take a photo of your finished challenge and share it on social media (tag #studioeriksdotter so I can see it), and tell me: How did this challenge feel? How have the perspective of your own creativity changed in the last week? If at all.
