DAY 3: PINK CALLA ON ORANGE

Look at you, you’re amazing! Way to go three days in a row.

Today’s subject and challenge is of a calla lily, but from the view of looking down into the calla lily. The petals are almost heart shaped and you’re left imagining what the rest of the calla lily looks like. It’s a bit unexpected and fun.

The Painting Practice

Remember to turn off your phone notifications before you start.

  1. Sketch a rectangular shape on your paper.
  2. While looking at your reference photos as your inspiration, do a simple outline of the flower on your paper. Just a rough sketch will do.
    • In the middle of your rectangle, draw the left petal starting from the highest point.
    • Now draw the top right petal.
    • Add the inside lines, and the spike.
  3. Choose your colors: I’ve been loving the pink + orange color combo for a long time, but it can also be a white calla lily on a light blue background or any other colors you like.  Notice how the sky is gradient on the diagonal and goes from light at the top right corner, to dark in the bottom left corner. You can pick a different way of doing your background, why not a striped one? When you’re painting the flower, start with the spike, then the darker colors surrounding it. Then blend in whatever color you want, working your way out of the depth of the calla. Wash your brush often so you don’t carry the darker colors too far up onto the petals.
  4. Grab some water and your brushes, and don’t forget a towel to clean off your wet brush.
  5. Now, set a gentle timer and paint for 20 minutes for some meditative joy and playful painting. If a timer is not feeling you good, don’t use it. Simply paint for a short time.
  6. Claim your creativity and honor your journey of showing up for yourself by signing your art work.
